NetCounter is a nice and simple network traffic counter. It does what you would expect it to: counting your traffic. You can see the traffic consumption of your GSM and Wifi traffic and also configure volume based alarms. This comes in handy if you got a traffic limit. You can also configure, add or remove the different dynamic counters and export or import the data as csv. NetCounter starts automatically with your phone and there was no noticeable battery usage for me and I had it running for the last few days.

Vanilla Music Player is a nice and simple music player app for your Android smartphones. It comes with different home screen widgets, distinguishes itself with its very simple to use interface. Nontheless it features everything you expect from a good music Player. It supports last.fm scrobbling and some nice settings regarding how the player behaves when there are notifications or if it should just play music when there is an external output like a (Bluetooth) headset available. No more embarassing moments caused by accidentally started music! Also after finishing a playlist/album it chooses random songs in your collection so goodbye to silence after a playlist/album is done. Especially for people who like simplicity and apps that just work Vanilla Music Player should be interesting.

OpenSudoku is, as the name implies, a sudoku game. It comes with 90 puzzles in 3 difficulty levels. You can get more by creating puzzles by yourself on your device, downloading them from the website, or importing them from a SD-Card. Altogether, this is a really nice game for Sudoku fans with an Android smartphone :-)

I assume everybody is familiar with what exactly a compass does, so this will be kind of brief. Marine Compass is another simple compass app for your Android smartphone. The basic version is Open Source and there are some themes in the market so you can customize the appearance. The pro version offers some extra features like GPS positions and transparency. The special feature of 3D Compass is that the orientation of the telephone has no influence on the localization result. which is kinda nice. I consider getting the pro version as I liked this app a lot :-)

Vudroid – A better Open Source PDF Reader for Android

As promised here is the review of Vudroid. Another PDF Reader for Android with more functions than the one we tested last week. Vudroid is developed by the same developer as PdfDroid and DjvuDroid but these projects are now deprecated and not continued as Vudroid is their successor.

Vudroid offers everything you need for reading comfortably through your PDFs. There is multitouch zoom which works great (you can disable the zoom slider by double tapping on the display), jump-to-page functionality, you can scroll continuously through the pages and fast orientation changing with automatic zoom to full width. The speed of the text buildup depends on the complexity of the document but is generally quick and also much faster than PDF Viewer. One other thing I noticed comparing VuDroid and PDF Viewer is that the text rendering is much sharper as you can see in the screenshot. I think I will switch to VuDroid from Acrobat Reader because at last this is a competative Open Source alternative to the proprietary Adobe Acrobat Reader on Android.

Wardrive — List Wifi Networks on a Map

Wardrive is a cool App which allows you to scan wireless access points, keep them stored and finally display them on a map. I couldn’t really test it extensively since it managed to drain the battery of my G1 in about 10 minutes from 100 to 1 percent. Something’s not right there, so you should only run it when there’s a power supply near by. But then it does rock. I just did a KML-export and imported it on Google Maps, it’s quite surprising that there are so many access points around, even in this rural area :)

XkcdViewer is a simple XKCD Comicviewer. Besides showing comics and hovertexts it features a search, favourites, sharing functions and more.

I can’t think of a more comfortable way to browse through XKCD-Comics.

KeePassDroid — A Mobile Password Safe

KeePassDroid is the Android port of the popular KeePass Password Management tool, well known for its secure encryption model. If you can’t remember all your passwords (I can’t) and don’t want to use a webservice like LastPass, Xmarks or Google’s Chrome Sync then KeePass is the way to go. The Android App only supports AES right now, but this should be well enough anyways and you can improve security by encrypting the database with an additional keyfile. To keep your database uptodate you can sync it with tools like Swiftp, but KeePassDroid works really well with the Dropbox App, too. Having it automatically synced across your computers can become quite beneficial :)

Beem — XMPP/Jabber Client

Beem is a XMPP-Client for your Android. Another well known app for that is Meebo, but since this is a webapp there are some privacy concerns. Beem let’s you connect safely (SSL/TLS) to your own or trusted XMPP-Server and chat with your contacts. On my G1, it’s not too happy when I switch between landscape and portrait-mode too often. Also I’d like to use it with multiple accounts which it can’t handle currently. Being actively developed I hope this’ll come soon. There’s already a Ticket for it ;-)
